Case of the Week 215

An unstained liver cyst aspirate showed the following structures (CLICK ON IMAGES TO ENLARGE):

(Unstained wet-prep, 400x times original magnification)

Based on this finding, the cyst was resected and showed the following:

(H&E, 40 times original magnification)

(Bodian stain, 200x original magnification)

(Silver chromate stain, 200 times original magnification)

Diagnosis?

Hydatid sand from the interior of an Echinococcus granulosus cyst. Protoscolices nicely demonstrated.

These are not daughter cysts, but brood capsules

This can only be Echinococcus hydatic cysts. Very well captured photos.
