Case of the Week 447

This week's case is in honor of Memorial Day and was generously donated by Florida Fan. I've actually revived this from a previous case, since the colors (red, white and blue) are so beautiful with Florida Fan's rendition of the modified safranin stain. The red objects seen below were found in stool and measure approximately 10 micrometers in diameter.

Identification?

Very patriotic and beautiful! Looks like Cryptosporidium to me, which are 4-6 microns in size. Cyclospora, which also stain with safranin are larger up to around 10 microns. Nice one Florida Fan and Bobbi!

My apologies Kevin - the size is actually about 10 microns diameter. I will fix that right away :)

Hi, I really like this page and I have been watching the cases of the beginning, I already are in the case 100 but could not resist to answering this.
The parasite is Cyclospora cayetanensis, it can be misplaced with Cryptosporidium but the last is smaller.
Thanks for the cases, I really enjoy them :D
