Case of the Week 162

The following objects were identified in a concentrated fecal preparation from a 5 year old Kenyan adoptee. They range in size from 30 to 60 microns in length. Identification? (CLICK ON IMAGES TO ENLARGE)

  1. Interesting. They sort of look like Capillaria philippinensis eggs and they're in the right size range. However, they lack the bipolar opercula characteristic of Capillaria. Good case!

  2. Also, the patient's country of origin is inconsistent with C. philippinensis. Hmmm...maybe pollen?

  3. There are Capillaria species in sub-Saharan Africa, and if I were convinced that this is a helminth egg that would be my best guess, but I wonder if we're looking at some sort of plant material or a mite egg.
