The following were seen in a stool specimen from a man with watery diarrhea. The stain is a modified safranin stain. They measure 8-10 microns in diameter. Identification?
400x original magnification
1000x original magnification
Many thanks to Florida Fan for these beautiful images!
Blastocystis hominis
ReplyDeleteWhat's the calibration on the ocular micrometer -- what's the size of these objects?
ReplyDeleteI am not sure of the size, but if its 4-5 µm, i would say Cryptosporium oocysts
ReplyDeletesorry for the misspelling, Cryptosporidium
ReplyDeleteCyclospora...too big for Cryptosporidium...

The occular micrometer has been calibrated to measure:
ReplyDelete1 graduation = 2.5 nm at 400x
1 graduation = 1.0 nm at 1000x
total magnification.

Cyclospora measure 8-10 um Cryptosporidium sp. 4-5 um

Shame on me! I've now added the size.
ReplyDeleteCyclospora cayetanensis, uniform safranin staining.
ReplyDeleteJust Curious...does anyone have an ocular micrometer that deviates from 100x = 10nm, 400x = 2.5 and 1000x = 1 nm. I have calibrated many scopes in my career and have never seen one different. Just Curious. Lee
