Case of the Week 265

I have another very 'pretty' case for you this week.  The following protozoa were seen in a trichrome stained stool smear from a pig farmer, originally from China.  The cysts measure approximately 11-15 micrometers in diameter, while the trophozoites measure 15-20 micrometers in greatest dimention.  Identification?

  2. Entamoeba polecki Primarily host of pig. Trophozoite and cysts form present on smears. Cysts are uninucleated.

  3. How about Entamoeba coli?

  4. The karyosome of the trophs is too small to be a E.coli. Also the peripheral chromatin of the nucleus is not heavy enough to be a E.coli.

  5. Judging by the size, nuclear features and especially the numerous large chromatoid bodies, I would have to vote for E. polecki. History of pig farming is also appropriate as noted above.

  6. Thank you all for giving away the answer. Yes this amoeba can be confused with either E. histolytica or E. coli. The clue is the single nucleus and many chromatoidal bars of the cyst stage.

  9. E. Polecki. The bars give it away.

  10. Entamoeba polecki because in the cysts you can see lots of chromatin bars.

Is this species a pathogen ?

  12. bks-

The bars are the Chromatoid bars in the last photo. The red, cigar shaped objects in the cytoplasm.
