Case of the Week 269

This case was generously donated by Florida Fan.  The following object measures approximately 4 cm in length.  It is stained with a Carmine stain.  Identification?

Bonus question:  Which end is this?

  1. I'm guessing the curly end is the head.

  2. Trichuris trichiura or "whipworm" I think. The eggs look like lemons and make me super thirsty for lemonade everytime. I think the narrow curly end is the mouth/esophageal end because I vaguely recall it is the opposite of what I would immediately guess. Sweet case!

  3. trichuris trichura or more accurately tricocephalus

  4. Female Trichuris, the posterior is thickened, so the skinny part is the head. The Posterior is not curled, so I am guessing female...Lee
