Case of the Week 294

The following were seen in a stool ova and parasite exam in a 34 year old businessman with recent travel to India.  He reports a 2-week history of watery diarrhea.  They are relatively few in number and range in size from 8 to 20 micrometers in diameter.  How would you interpret this finding?

    Blastocystis subtype. I find it interesting that this man suffered from diarrhoea considering the contentious and complex nature of the pathogenicity of Blatocystis. Would be interesting to find out which subtype it belongs to! I believe subtypes 3 and 7 are the ones most commonly associated with pathology.

    Blastocystis hominis. We find these very often in our lab. They range from 5-20 microns in size. Would any body elaborate further on the subtypes and their pathogenicity?
