Case of the Week 348

This week's case is generously donated by Florida Fan.

The patient is a 4-month old girl. The following object was found in her stool/diaper, measuring 3 x 7 mm.
The fixative liquid was centrifuged and the sediment was examined at 100x and 400x total magnification.

The object was cleared and stained using Semichon's carmine stain which revealed one lateral genital pore and the interior oviduct.

Identification?

  1. Dog-cat tapeworm? Just listened to a case-based lecture (a Pediatric Grand Rounds) on this affliction 3 days ago! How weird...

  3. Another vote for Dipylidium caninum. Typical rice shaped proglottid. Round eggs in egg packet. Eggs with hooklets.

    Great Pictures!

  4. everything says to me D. caninum apart from the single lateral genital pore, I thought that D. caninum had 2 giving it the name the 'double pored' tapeworm...

  5. Indeed, there is a second genital pore directly opposite the one photographed. There was some tissue shrinking and the photography did not render a very clear view of the second one.
    My regrets,

  8. Dipylidium caninum proglottid and egg packets. Also, one of the two genital pores in the proglottid is shown.
