Case of the Week 463

The following objects were seen in a urine specimen obtained from a 16-year old male from Northern Africa. The urine was noted to be grossly bloody. Identification?

They were clearly still alive!

  1. Definitely a case of schistosomiasis with Schistosoma haematobium. The video clip clearly shows a live miracidium inside the egg.

  2. Indeed, living Schistosoma haematobium eggs. Miracidium ready to get out of the egg, in order to look for the intermediate snail-host.

  4. This is a Schistosoma haematobium ovum, causative agent of Urinary bilharziasis. However, the terminal spine is not as prominent as it is usually seen.

  5. Definitely S.haematobium. Much clearer images here compared to the ones on LinkedIn, with visible terminal spines and a miracidium...
