Case of the Week 467

This week's post is the second in my new collaboration with the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp and Idzi Potters. The following objects were seen in a urine specimen from a 73 year old man. They measure approximately 150 micrometers in length. The specimen was delayed in getting to the laboratory, and the patient indicated that it was mixed with toilet water.

Identification?

  1. They're adorable. My guess is a non-pathogenic Paramecium, possibly caudatum.

  2. miracidium of Schistosoma haematobium

  3. Interesting case! They look like Schistosoma miracidia. Probably of S. haematobium, as it is a urine sample; I even thought I saw red blood cells, which would indicate hematuria that is compatible with genitourinary schistosomiasis.

  4. That's really cool! I browsed youtube for miracidia videos (miracidios?) and the motility of this one looks most like S. haematobium.

  5. My bet will be miracidium of S. haematobium with its pointed front end, Paramecias do not have this morphological aspect. The presence of red cells also is indicative of the infection.

  9. From my basic biology this looks like a euglena or shistosoma. Paramecium have cilia throughout the body with a curvature and nucleus. The monentum is not that of an amoeba.

  10. Aw, this was an incredibly good post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to generate a very good article… but what can I say… I put things off a lot and don't manage to
    get anything done.
