This week's case is from Dr. Kamran Kadkhoda. The following object was found in the diaper of 3 year old child. It measures approximately 30 cm in length. Identification?
The overall appearance is for an Ascaris lumbricoides worm.Although female Ascarids are usually slightly longer than males, a size of 30 cm is possible for both. However, its tail is neither coiled nor curved, so it is more likely not a male worm. Moreover, I can see a "vulvar waist" near the middle of the worm (not easy to identify in this picture) which is a characteristic feature of FEMALE Ascaris lumbricoides worm.
Adult female of Ascaris lumbricoides.
ReplyDeleteThe three lips typical for ascarids are nicely visible! Wonderful picture!
Ascaris lumbricoides. Probably a female by size

Length of the worm, trilobate mouth and straight tail.... all go in favour of female Ascaris lumbricoides
