Case of the Week 479

This week's case is from Dr. Kamran Kadkhoda. The following object was found in the diaper of 3 year old child. It measures approximately 30 cm in length. Identification?

    The three lips typical for ascarids are nicely visible! Wonderful picture!

  5. The overall appearance is for an Ascaris lumbricoides worm.Although female Ascarids are usually slightly longer than males, a size of 30 cm is possible for both. However, its tail is neither coiled nor curved, so it is more likely not a male worm. Moreover, I can see a "vulvar waist" near the middle of the worm (not easy to identify in this picture) which is a characteristic feature of FEMALE Ascaris lumbricoides worm.
