Case of the Week 481

Happy Valentine's Day! Here is a special photo taken by Emily Fernholz, my awesome education specialist. These 2 little worms were found in a concentrated stool specimen and measure approximately 250 micrometers long.  Identification?

  1. How fitting, a pair of rhabditiform larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis performing a romantic ballet. This is great as we are only two days away from Valentine's day.

  4. These are two Strongyloides stercoralis rhabditiform larvae, each showing a distinctively short buccal cavity and a prominent genital primordium (oval-shaped structure near the waist) which is not well-defined here due to the fact that stools have been preserved in formalin (fresh stools show much better morphology). It would have been nice if the case was supported by a video showing the two larvae in action! :)

  5. Concur with the previous posters - Strongyloides stercoralis rhabditiform larvae, intertwined in romantic interlude (or so it seems to us mere humans!). How heartwarming! I feel the love!
