Case of the Week 584

This week's fun case was generously donated by Dr. José Poloni, one of my Twitter buddies (@JoseTesser). The object below was found in the undergarments of a 35 year-old woman. No other history is provided. Identification? How would you sign this case out?

Could it be a pupa of a drain, sink or filter fly of the family Psychodidae? It looks however also to a pupa of family Ephydridae.

  2. Definitely a dipteran pupa.
I agree with Anatoly: fruit fly pupa (Drosophilidae).
    No medical significance.

  4. what on Earth is this insect larva? I made a couple of searches yet did not find a suitable identification. As such, I can only say that it is an insect larva, most likely an incidental finding with no clinical relevance.

  5. I do not recognize this critter. Has the appearance of an immature aquatic diptera. I was particularly interested in the 2 palmate gills. But I know of no aquatic dipteran that looks quite like this.

After checking out images of fruit flly pupae I agree with Anatoly and Idzi. The irony is I probably have endless numbers of these critters residing in my kitchen waste recycling bin. Jokes on me.
