The following objects were seen on Giemsa-stained touch preps of a skin biopsy from a patient with a slowly enlarging ulcer. He had recently travelled to Costa Rica. Identification? What additional testing is indicated?
Identification of the isolated species with monoclonal antibodies, isoenzyme analysis, hybridization with DNA probes or polymerase chain reaction (PCR). It is especially important in travelers to Central and South America to rule out infection by L. braziliensis.

A case of cutaneous leishmaniasis (L. braziliensis or L. mexicana), indeed. We can see clearly the nucleus and kinetoplast from the amastigotes and the host cells nucleus. PCR is recommended.
