Case of the Week 797

This week's case was generously donated by Florida Fan and is a fun finding to close the year.

The following objects were found in vaginal secretions (Giemsa stain, 1000x original magnification).

What is your diagnosis? Is there anything special about the image shown here?

I think spermatozoa but not sure what the special feature is.

Could this be Trichomonas vaginalis?

Trichomonas vaginalis trophozoites/Patrik

Trophozoites of Trichomonas vaginalis. They are pyriform with a large nucleus and we can clearly see the flagellum alongside the undulating membrane.

Trichomonas vaginal trophozoites.
It seem that the bottom one is dividing as it seems to have two nuclei and two sets of flagella.

Haha… I see that I commented anonymously… but that’s me talking about the two sets of flagella and the double nucleus…

Happy 2026 to the entire parasitology community!
