Case of the Week 214

The following were seen on Giemsa-stained peripheral blood films from a 2 year old adoptee from Zimbabwe.  Identification?  Based on what features? (CLICK ON IMAGES TO ENLARGE)

Smart money on malaria--falcip in Zimbabwe. But these look funny. How about Babesiosis: some pear-shaped organisms, some tip-to-tip.

Looks more like P. ovale to me, but this is uncommon outside West Africa. Thanks for sending these. They are fun for us clinicians who are not parasitologists

I think that it's Plasmodium ovale. I'm a biologist interested in parasitology and this is a funny way to learn more about the parasites. I'm looking forward reading the answer and new case.

Sch├╝ffner's dots, infected cells are roughly the same size as uninfected cells: P. ovale.
