Case of the Week 470

This week's case was donated from Dr. Kamran Kadkhoda. This worm was submitted to the laboratory in saline. It had been seen on the surface of stool from a 3 year old girl.

The following objects were seen within the worm and in the saline submitted with the specimen. They measure approximately 60 micrometers in length.

Identification?

Enterobius vermicularis.

Yes, the patient may experience anal pruritus or the worm may be observed crawling on the surface of the stool. The worm show the anterior alae and an empty caudal section. The middle part of the body is typically filled with ova.
Enterobius vermicularis is still with us as long as the ova are shared usually involuntarily.

Those egg-laden worms are definitely pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis). Each worm usually lays approximately 10 000 eggs per day and are best seen with the cellophane/scotch tape technique.

According to my predecessors: this is a gravid female of pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis)

Interesting Pinworm case. What would the likely cause be, being that the patient is so young?
