Case of the Week 204

The following was passed in the stool of an otherwise asymptomatic patient.

Representative portions of the specimen were cleared using Euparal and pressed between 2 glass slides to show the following:

 An H&E section was also obtained (shown at 40 times original magnification)

Finally, the following was expressed from the fresh specimen.

Taenia saginata

Taenia species, looks like saginata.

I concur Taenia spp, I remember the species are differentiated by the hook number in the ova but I can't remember which way round they are!

Taenia Saginata
To distinguish T.saginata (cow) from T.solium (pig) you must count the lateral branches of the "stem" or trunk.
T. saginata has 15 or more (as in this case)

The eggs of T.saginata and T solium are not distinguishable from eachother

TAnia saginata due to the presence of 12 or more uterine branches. Tania solium has fewer than 10.

Taenia saginata or T. asiatica (based on uterine branches) depending on where this gentlemen was from or on his travel history.
