Case of the Week 360

This week's case was generously donated by Dr. Sheldon Campbell, "the singing microbiologist." (seriously, his songs are great - check it out here).

The marking on the small scutum indicates this is an engorged female Amblyoma americanum. As the tick is full of "aspirations", the mouth parts and scaloping becomes less evident as these parts will be almost out of focus, a challenging photographic task.
