Intra leucocyte malarial pigment used to asses severity of disease in children
Agree, hemozoin in WBCs, or malaria pigment-carrying monocytes (PCM)
For sure, the brown pigment is malarial pigment called hemozoin that has been gobbled up by monocytes.
There is an excellent article on hemozoin on Wikipedia.

I would guess it's phagocytized remains of the malarial organisms...
In case of Theileriosis this type of pigment known as KBB in Veterinary..
