Case of the Week 544

This week's case features an interesting finding in a concentrated stool specimen. The photos are from my awesome technical specialist, Heather Arguello. The individual structures are approximately 25  micrometers in length, while the longer tubular structure is 330 micrometers long.

Identification?

My thought is that this is an artifact, a bit of ingested fungi. The second photo demonstrates an ascus containing 8 ascospores ( the result of one mitosis and one myosis resulting in eight cells). These structures form at the end of the fungal mycelium and represent the sexual stage of an alternating life cycle.

Putting this fungus in the phylum ascomycota. My guess would be it's an edible fungus. If specimen was taken in spring time I would suggest it to be a Morel mushroom. It's getting to be that time of year so keep your eyes peeled. They're fungus among us.

I think Old One has hit the nail on the head again. Nothing more to add. Interesting case and very good photos and video. How much you learn in this blog!

Definitely looks to be ascospores within and liberated from, an ascus.

Old One,
You amazing you! I love your comments since not only I learn but enjoy your keen sense of humor. More than one reason to read the Blog. Dr. Pritt never stops to twitch our thirst for knowledge. I really enjoy and appreciate even when dumb founded.

Thank you F.F. Speaking for myself I totally agree that Dr. Pritt and the Blog Gang have brightened my weeks and have drastically slowed my rate of fossilization.

Ascospore.

I agree with ascu and ascospores. I had some difficulty in identifying a possible parasite or artifact. However, once again, Old One eloquently clarified the case. Photos beautifully taken.
