Case of the Week 666

I have a fascinating parasite for the dreaded Case of the Week 666 - not a bad way to end out 2021! I promise I will start us off in 2022 with something fun.

The following was seen on a Giemsa-based stain from a liver cyst. Identification?

Liver cyst due to Echinococcus sp.

Enface view of a double ring arrangement of hooklets both large and small, morphologically consistent with those of the family taeniidae. Due to its occurrence in the human liver, I believe this to be a rostellum of an Echinococcus sp. protoscolex.

Size of hooklets would allow differentiation of this genus from other taeniids.

Wow, such a fantastic picture to end the year with. A frontal view of an Echinococcus rostellum. A few loose hooklets add the finishing touch to a rare medical beauty.
