Parasite Case of the Week 764

Here is our last case of 2024, courtesy of Drs. Courtney Comar and Laura Lamps. The following structures were seen in tissue removed during surgery from the peritoneal cavity of a patient with volvulus of the bowel and associated inflammatory changes. On histopathology, numerous foreign body giant cells and 'pulse granulomas' were seen. What are these structures?

As usual, Dr. Pritt saves the best for last. Since this never is my specialty, I’ll just take my leap of faith after for sure consulting the literature on the web: Schistosomiasis. The two long objects appear to be an amorous pair of adults, there seem to be a few tuberculations on the cuticle of one. The smaller elongated objects may be eggs, though I cannot see for certain the internal miracidium. This seems to be the answer to pulse granuloma. Again I always invoke a common excuse of mankind:” Errare humanum est”.

Thank you for another beautiful case Dr. Pritt and colleagues!
I happen to know how much Dr. Pritt loves parasite mimicks, so my guess would be that these are artefacts! On the second image I some of the structure look like "wood rings" having a slightly polygonal aspect with rounded corners. The long structures look like vegetable spirals (part of the spirovascular bundle of plants).
But I may be wrong of course - as Florida Fan nicely puts it: "Errare humanum est"!
Happy 2025 to everyone!

Maybe old suture material.
