Case of the Week 237

The following were seen in a concentrated stool wet preparation that had been stored in formalin for 6 months. They measure approximately 60 micrometers in greates dimension.  Identification?

Ascaris lumbricoides egg, fertile. It wouldn’t be a surprise if still moving after months in formalin. I had cases that remained viable after 16 months in formalin!

The structural composition with its lumpy outer layer and a smooth inner layer of the shell, the lobed nucleus,the oval shape and the dimension, all are characteristic for Ascaris lumbricoides fertile ova.

Bile staining, oval shape,outer mamillations characteristic.
