Case of the Week 381
This week's case is from a new slide I ordered through Carolina Biological Supplies and was very pleased with what I received. These little microscopic organisms play a role in the life cycle of several parasites. What are they, and can you list 2 of the associated parasites? Bonus - list 4!

It's a copepod!
Associated parasites: Dracunculus medinensis, Diphyllobothrium latum, Spirometra spp., Gnathostoma spinigerum.
BTW, we were looking at purchasing the Carolina Biological slide sets as well. Would you recommend the rest of the set?
Unfortunately I don't own the rest of the set so I can't comment on the quality of it. However, I was quite happy with this slide. As you can see from the picture, it shows the organism from both the lateral and anterior-posterior views, which I thought was really neat ( but could have just been luck). I havent ordered from them in the past, but probably will again in the future. Good luck with your new slides! Bobbi
That is Cyclops or Diaptomus. Related parasite is Dracunculus medinensis
Tangent: Is there some way to stain microscopic metazoa such as these to emphasize cell membranes (revealing macro cellular structure)? --bks
Beautiful pictures of copepods. Malassezia has identified all the possible parasites using these tiny crustaceans as vectors.

Nice photos of copepods! I have a large marine reef tank and I regularly purchase live copepods to feed to my corals.
