Case of the Week 399

Wow, we're almost at 400 cases! I will have to think of something extra special for next week. Meanwhile, here is classic finding in a trichrome-stained stool specimen (1000x).

Very nice photographs of Dientamoeba fragilis, with its fragmented nucleus. The last pictures shows the two nuclei. The trophozoites of this flagelate do not always show its two nuclei, yet if one finds on the formalin concentrate a trophozoite with a stretched out cytoplasm mimicking a dumb bell or two to tree uneven size balls of cytoplasm connected by a thread like extension of the cytoplasm, this is a very good indication of a D. fragilis troph.
