Case of the Week 670

This week's case was generously donated by Dr. Steven O'Connor. He noted multiple worms in an resected appendix, and captured the following images using a dissecting microscope. Identification?

Difficult to "PIN"-point the exact species of these nematodes without any mention of their size...

Enterobius vermicularis adult

Enterobius vermicularis - long pointed tail of female worm highlighted in 3 image. Appendix infestation has been documented to lead to accute appendicitis symptoms (PMID: 19061517).

For sure they are pin worms, that’s when there’s a necessity for a dissecting microscope. Ascaris are too big to magnify. Everyone pin them down right away.
