Case of the Week 597

This week's case is very timely, as we are seeing a lot of these objects in some of our stool specimens submitted for routine ova and parasite exam. They measure approximately 8-10 micrometers in dimension (shown at 500x and 1000x). Identification? What additional stain or study would you like to do?

Oh yes summer is here and with it a familiar bug. For sure none of us can stay away from eating vegetables, in particular lettuce be it Iceberg or Romaine and as such, we need to be familiar with this Coccidian.
What would I do? For sure a fresh smear in saline checking for "cyano-bacterium like blue bodies" will give a quick confirmation. I may also take a quick look at my Trichrome smear to find "ground glass appearance Pac-Man". Any acid fast stain using basic fuchsin or hot safranin will do, though the acid-fastness does vary greatly from specimen to specimen.
My colleagues prefer the auto-fluorescence as it is simple and fast.
Once again, thank you Dr. Pritt for such a timely reminder.
